How Weak Are We?

This story about Hans Island, in the Canadian arctic, is just sad.

"We said that we deplored the (Canadian) visit which was not announced to Denmark in advance, and we recalled that Hans Island has been part of Greenland since its discovery in 1852 during an expedition" conducted by Denmark and Greenland, the foreign ministry's chief legal counsel, Peter Taksoee-Jensen, told AFP.

The snow-covered site is uninhabitable, but the onset of global warming is expected to bring ship traffic to the region soon and open it up to mining, fishing or drilling for oil and gas.

You know it's pathetic when we're getting pushed around by Denmark. I've been watching this situation for a few years. Denmark has been making a staged play to claim a piece of Canadian territory, and they're not the only country doing it. The question is, what are we going to do about it?

I'd say the question is:
"What can we do about it?"

From what I understand this Hans Island is smack dab on the border of 2 nations. Canada doesn't use it they do. What natural resources are on this island?

I suggest we have to attack this situation threefold.

Firstly, we must set up a commission to study the problem...we need an operational budget of, say, $10 million.

Secondly, ignore the findings.

Thirdly, open the island up for gay marriages. After-all, that's all that really matters, isn't it?

Kelly,

The island is (supposedly) surrounded by oil. Neither country uses it right now. It's about future use of the waters around it.

Canada's assertion of sovereignty over the Arctic is pathetic. We have that massive landmass up there and we don't even have a single icebreaker, Denmark does! Instead of committing troops around the world before we are even asked, Paul Martin should show we actually do have some interest up there before more major players other than Denmark like claim it.

Boy, you know you should really check your facts first. Canada has Icebreakers going through the artic all the time. Their big red and White shps, heck yoy can even see them on the St Lawerence seaway, even during the summer.

I suggest sending Stephen Harper up there, dressed in his cowboy suit. That'll keep the Danes away; the heterosexual Danes anyway!

Hello fellow fisherman,

Did you know that 16% of the U.S. population goes fishing at least 16 days a year?

Did you also know that over 75% of the nations fishermen do not fish during "prime time"; fish feeding hours?

Those precious few moments before twilight can be absolutely magical. Even up until 11pm at night, the largest predators of any species feed ravenously.

Don't believe me? Check out Daniel Eggertsen's story, and a picture of a couple of his catches here : "Evening Secrets plus more"

I want you to do me a favor and try it out so I can see what you think of it, and if it works for you as well as it did for me.

You will be one of the first to try it out.

Gone Fishin',

Neil
